The Lab RACE Electronic Paddle Shifter Kart System from PRS Motorsport Equipment represents the top level of paddle shifter technology developed for professional kart racing. Designed specifically for high-performance KZ shifter engines, the RACE system integrates advanced electronics, real-time engine management features, and configurable driver controls to deliver the fastest and most precise shifting available.
Derived directly from top-level kart racing competition and developed alongside world-class drivers, the RACE system includes a fully programmable Gear Control Unit (GCU) with advanced software functions that optimize both upshifts and downshifts while protecting the engine from over-rev conditions.
While engineered primarily for KZ shifter kart engines, the RACE system can also be adapted for high-performance moto-based gearbox engines where advanced shift control and engine management features are required.
Key Features
Advanced GCU Configurable via Bluetooth App
The system uses a powerful Gear Control Unit programmable through a Bluetooth smartphone app (Android and iOS). Depending on the configuration, between 2 and 18 parameters can be adjusted, allowing racers to fine-tune shifting behavior, engine cut-off timing, and other control parameters directly from their device.
ACS Function – Advanced Cut-Off System
The patented ACS system developed by The Lab Motorsport reads and processes engine RPM data to determine the optimal ignition cut-off strategy during upshifts. By selecting the specific spark events to interrupt, the system enables extremely fast shifts without the lag typically experienced with traditional ignition cut systems, delivering smoother power delivery during acceleration.
DIM Function – Downshift Input Memory
The DIM system assists drivers during aggressive downshifting by monitoring the timing between downshift commands. If a downshift is requested too early or too quickly, the system will temporarily store the input and execute it at the correct moment once engine RPM reaches a safe threshold. This prevents missed shifts and protects the engine from potential over-rev damage.
Over-Rev Protection
During downshifting the GCU continuously monitors engine RPM. If a downshift command would cause the engine to exceed a safe RPM limit, the system will block the shift until the engine speed falls within the acceptable range. This protects the engine from mechanical damage during race conditions.
Dynamic Control Panel
The RACE system includes a driver-accessible control panel that allows on-track adjustments. Drivers can switch between three different shift mappings while driving and control additional functions such as neutral engagement and launch control without needing to stop the kart.
Mechanical or Electronic Blipper Support
The integrated blipper system allows smooth clutch-free downshifts by briefly opening the throttle during the downshift phase. The system can operate with either mechanical blippers or fully electronic blippers that interface with the engine control unit and throttle position sensor (TPS) for optimal gear engagement.
Launch Control Function
The launch control feature helps drivers achieve maximum traction during race starts. Once activated, the system holds the engine at a preset RPM level to optimize traction. When the driver upshifts into second gear, the launch control automatically disengages, allowing full acceleration.
